Previous owner put gear oil in differential...

Previous owner put gear oil in the differential, am I OK to just drain it out and fill with DEXRON II and call it good? Would it hurt to have a little oil mixed with the DEXRON?

It is a 89 2.0 Automatic with front wheel drive.

you can drain it but drain it good. might wanna drain it agian afterward just for good measure. So drain and fill twice with Dex type III

^ I have to agree. If there is any damage, it is already done, so go back to what should be in there.

Justin, In the maintenance section of the manual I downloaded it specifies to use DEXRON II, is there a reason I should use type III.

thats the old reference to it. Dexron Type II/III is the samething just new number.. Superseded part # sir

Above the drain and fill plugs on 91 540e transaxle.
thick gear oil in the differential leads to scored pinion thrust washers; industrial oil 10 w can be used to flush the unit before filling with ATF DIII.
Some drivers used the procedure like this:

• drain and fill differential with 10 weight oil.
• set the parking brake
• lift left front side of the car so the wheel is 1 inch above the ground; support the car on the stand and block the rigth front wheel.
• start the engine
• shift to drive; do not go over 10 mph per speedometer
• after 5 minutes drain the oil [it can be hot] so be careful.
• refill with Dextron III
