1990 Camry V6/AT - O/D Light Flashes

The O/D Off Light on my 1990 Camry flashes consistently every time I engage overdrive. I have approximately 117k, and the car drives as well now as it did when I bought it 12 years ago. The light started flashing a few months ago but there hasn't been any change in how the transmission behaves.

I disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes, then reconnected it. For the next two days, the "O/D Off" light did NOT flash when I engaged overdrive. On the third day, the "O/D Off" light began to flash as soon as I moved the car 15 feet with the overdrive button engaged. The light doesn't flash when the car is in reverse, or when the O/D button is disengaged.

Does anyone know what the flashing O/D Off light indicates?

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Steve

I find it kind of weird that you mention reading the number of flashes from the O/D light.

All the Toyota's that i've checked blink the check engine light.

Let we know how it goes and feel free to ask again.
If need description let me know VIN-code or A/T-type (for example, A340-E)
Best of Luck,

Need Help Urgently...
Hi guys,

I really need help over here. I have 2 situations here.

1- My ABS blink and i check the code exactly like alflash website.
2 codes apprear. code 31 and code 36. Please let me know what is going wrong with my ABS system.

2- My O/D light is flashing these few days. I sent it to my mechanic and he said it is the loose and spoil switch( The OD switch) Besides the OD switch, is there any sensor around? How to confirm if it is the OD switch problem? Is there any code apprear if it is my OD switch. Anyone have any diagnostic code references, ie..code 81 is for OD switch, etc, etc...

For your information, i am using the A140/03E Auto gearbox..

Thank you very much for your help...

Sorry for the double post....

Hello,
Dear Sir,
1. Quotes.
a) ABS. DTC DEFINITIONS (BOSCH):
...Code 31. Malfunction of right front wheel speed sensor signal. Check speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector.
...Code 36. Open in left front wheel speed sensor circuit. Check speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector.
b) DTC DEFINITIONS (NIPPONDENSO):
...Code 31. Malfunction of right front wheel speed sensor signal. Check speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector.
...Code 36. Open in right front or left rear wheel speed sensor circuit.
Check speed sensor, sensor rotor, wiring harness and connector.
c) IMO: these codes is "history codes"...
Need clearing DTCs (by removing ECU-B fuse, but other memory systems will be canceled or by "Turn ignition on. Remove short pin from DLC1. Connect jumper wire between terminals Tc and E1 of DLC1 or DLC2. With vehicle stopped, press brake pedal 8 or more times within 3 seconds.
DTCs will be erased. Verify ABS light goes out after 3 seconds..." and verify ABS light flashes normal DTC (ABS light flashes 2 times per second).
Under normal driving read codes again.

2. A/T A140E has't code 81*... and it has't code for malfunction O/D switch**...

Code 81 read by flashing O/D Lampe or by other?

*O/D Lampe codes:
42 - Vehicle Speed Sensor
62 - No. 1 Solenoid
63 - No. 2 Solenoid
64 - Lock-Up Solenoid
DTC (by using OBDII Scan Tools)
P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor
P0750 .- (2) No. 1 Solenoid
P0753 - No. 1 Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P0755 - (2) No. 2 Solenoid
P0758 - No. 2 Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P0770 .- (2) (3) Lock-Up Solenoid
P0773 -(3) Lock-Up Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P1780 - Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction

**OVERDRIVE (OD) SWITCH. Disconnect electrical connector from OD switch, located on shift lever. Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 1 and 3 on Camry with switch released (OFF position). Ensure no continuity exists with switch depressed (ON position). Replace switch if defective.

Let me know and I will send to you description for Diagnostic (from Mitchell On-Demand).

Advise

Alflash,

I just get my tranny code. This O/D light blink a few codes.
The codes are 42,62,63 and 64. When the car is idling, the OD light wont blink. If you rev the car while it is not moving, the OD light will blink again. After that, if you drive , for a while, the blink will gone.

Besides that, If I drive downhill and the gear is at 4th, when i press OD off, it will goes to 3rd gear but when I pull 2nd gear, the tranny wont goes into 2nd gear unless i accelerate a bit on the throttle.

Can you please advise.

Thank you again..

Update

Guys,

Finally I fixed the O/D problem. Previously, the OD codes blink 42,62,63 and 64. After I change one of the solenoid.( should be 2nd gear solenoid) all the 62,63 and 64 codes are gone. Now only have code 42.

I know this is the vehicle speed sensor, Anyone know where is this sensor located? I am driving a 5SFE with A140 auto tranny.

Thank you very much..
