i have a '91 toyo camry dx 6 cyl. automatic, recently purchased it and i did all the standard fluid changes. the car needed freon so went and had it put in, was told that compressor was weak and it would throw out cool air but eventually go back to reg. warm air. first of all i live in texas where right now the temp had been around 95 plus so i dont use or need the heater, but i do need the aircon. well i replaced the compressor and now i'm in the process of replacing the expansion valve and drier. (by the way has anyone replaced the expansion valve, and if so can u give me some tips) today the temp gauge starting showing the temp going up slowly and gradually up to the midway point then slowly higher then a little higher. i've done the flush and it has coolant with some water. i dont know if the thermostat has ever been changed or not, but my question is do i really need the thermostat at all, being that i dont use the heater and cause of the climate i live in? i've heard that i can remove it and just go without it. also one fan (passenger side) is always on, from the moment i turn on the car till i turn it off. the other fan (drivers side) how can i check to see if it works and whats it for? if it doesnt work can i set it up to have it running when i need it and with a switch? lastly, do any of you have gauges instead of relying on the lites? i wanna go with the trio gauges (temp, oil, and voltage) what do you think? please help me out on these matters. thanks in advance guys.
can someone please help me out with this issue? just wanna know if i can go WITHOUT the thermostat, any tips on removing or finding the expansion valve in the evaporator, already removed glovebox and dont know where to begin, and what about the trio gauges, has anyone put them in and how they did it, and hows it working out for you? please help a fellow toyotian out.
your gas mileage will go down if you don't have a thermostat.
just replace it. it's cheap.
if you haven't bought your drier and expansion valve yet, go to ackits, com.
waaaay cheaper than anywhere i've found.
bought my drier for my 4 banger for 9 bucks. works great!
don't know about the constant fan on.
the factory sevice manual will help you on changing your expansion valve.
You can also download the manual from the link bryce posted above. Manual should tell you how to test if the thermofan is working properly or not. The other fan is for your air-conditioner, so that may be the one that's constantly on.
you have to have a thermostat to warm the motor up, the expansion valve is inside the evaporator case behind the glove box and tour going to need a dryer and pag oil too, pull it down and then fill er up, bes to have it done
unfortunately already have the drier and expansion valve, a few of you mentioned oil as well (i'm assuming its for the compressor or drier?) whats it for and how do you put it in, and what kind of oil? and does anyone know for sure where or which of all those black boxes behind the glovebox is the evaporator? i'll definately use those websites though. one more thing, has anyone installed those aftermarket trio gauges instead of "trusting" their lights? i wanna do that but wanted to see if anyone else had done this and how to do it. thanks again guys
i didn't get the trio since the temp gauge is pretty good i only worry when it goes over the middle mark.. i only have a oil psi gauge search for the thread it has the part# and site you can order from to make it work other than the guage itself of course
