hard start

I own an 89 camry with the 2.0 liter engine. It has automatic trans. My problem is when starting the engine after sitting all day in temperatures approximately above 80 or better, the engine has a hard time starting. It cranks for a few seconds and then it finally starts up. It almost sounds like it isnt getting enough gas. This only happens with a cold engine on a hot day! It never happens on a hot day with a warm engine or on a cold day with a cold or warm engine. Has anybody experienced this with this engine?

it sounds like it could be your cold start injector. I've had the same problem with a cold engine starting. It would crank and crank a few times before starting up. I found the part at Autozone for about $140. I haven't bought the part as of yet. I've cleaned the cold start injector with some cleaner and it seems to be working fine now.

hope this helps...

In addition to what was said above, also check your cold start time switch. It is the sensor that activates the cold start injector. It may be out of range and not sending out the proper engine temperature. It is located under a brown plastic connector on the coolant port, on the right side of the engine as you are standing in front of the car. You will need a digital volt/ohmeter and the specs from any manual to do this.
