3S-GTE Transaxle Options

I guess it was inevitable that I'd do a 3S-GTE swap. Plans for the swap are going smoothly, except the one part I'm stuck at: Mating the 3S-GTE to the transmission.

One option is to keep the S51 transmission, which requires a custom clutch using the S51 splines and the 3S-GTE flywheel/plate. Has anyone actually gone this route, and if so, where'd you get the clutch made? I went to advancedclutch.com, but they want detailed specifications and dimensions that I don't have. Telling them "S51 splines and 3S-GTE flywheel" isn't enough I guess. I assume that putting the S51 clutch into the 3S-GTE flywheel/pressure plate wouldn't work.

The other option is using the E52 transmission from a V6 Camry. Seems easy enough since the V6 axles would fit the hubs ok, and I could use the stock 3S-GTE clutch, but I'm stumped on what to do with the halfshaft. I don't think the halfshaft from a V6 will bolt on the 3S block, and I don't think the S51 halfshaft would simply plug into the E52 (Could be wrong?).

Most 3S-GTE swaps seem to end up using an E series tranny, so what would work in this situation? Is the MR2 turbo axle bearing bracket + E52 halfshaft the only solution?

This project is on a budget, so nothing fancy like an E153 because I know someone's going to say it.

Thanks

btw - It's an ST185 3S-GTE

Your two reasonable options:

S-series trans: Use all stock 4-cylinder Camry parts other than the clutch/flywheel setup. Use a 3s-gte flywheel and pressure plate and a 3s-gte clutch disk with s-series clutches. Spec, among other clutch companies makes one. Search the Celica boards for more info.

E-series trans (you can later bolt an E153 in place of the E52 with no mods): Use all 3s-gte flywheel/pressureplate/clutch parts. Use complete V6 Camry axles (auto or manual are the same) and get the axle carrier bracket (that bolts to the block) from an MR2 turbo.

V6 manual Camry shifter cables will only work with an E-series trans. 4-cylinder manual Camry shifter cables with work with the S-series trans with no mods (obviously!) and will work with the E-series trans if you make small spacers where they attach to the trans. I just hacked up some large washers I had laying around.

PS. For varying amounts of money, there are actually LSD options for both style transmissions.

I have a E5X(E52 internals mixed with E150 internals) hybrid tranny in mine. I say start with an E52 and rear bracket from and MR2 and you're golden.

Hey thanks for the replies!

I found a clutch kit at Phoenix Tuning's website. Thank you Dr Tweak!

The place I was going to get the motor from relocated across the country, so I'm now trying to find another JDM engine dealer to deal with.

I'll post pics in this thread as my swap progresses.
