Exclamation Rusted Muffler

Several months ago I noticed that my camry got about twice as loud as it was before... Just the other day I bothered to look at the muffler, and I noticed towards the top it is rusted out. Probably about a 2"x4" hole.

I was just wondering if this effects performance / MPG. There is probably a little less back pressure, so I imagine it might???

Is there any way I can easily / cheaply patch this hole? I was thinking something along the lins of a getting a small sheet of tin / aluminum and maybe some high temperature tape (if it exists)?

My grandfather gave me the car 1 year ago. The muffler was replaced 6 years ago from Midas and apparently it is "warranted by Midas for as long as you own the vehicle" well my grandfather gave me the car, so I guess the warranty is not valid? I would rather avoid paying $150+ for a new muffler...

Your advice, comments, suggestions are apreciated.

Ended up buying a $5 kit and patching it myself... It was a bit tricky to wrap the stuff around the muffler... Took about an hour to do the whole process, including letting it idle for 10 minutes to finish the process. Doesn't look the best, but it definitly sealed up the muffler pretty good. No more loud rusted muffler sound... LOL

I'm thinking I might paint the muffler with High temp BBQ paint...

It is rusting from the inside out so the paint will not protect it from rusting.

Patching wont work. I have had several holes in my muffler. If you are planning on keeping the car, get a Midas Muffler with a lifetime warranty.

Well we'll see how long it lasts. I've read online about a mechanic who used these kits on a couple cars and the patch was still working for 5 years. Also, the purpose of the paint would be to cover over the white strips NOT to rust protect the muffler.
