sigh...its raining here in new york. i was on my way to work this morning when my tranny started slipping..car warmed u p and it was fine. few miles later the engine made a strange noise and vibrated really hard..i felt it through the shift lever. i let off the gas and heard a lound whine coming from the engine..constantly so i pulled over and turned it off only to find out it would not start again. everytime i turn the key..i get a loud grown and thts it..nothing else. i ended up callin a tow truck and now the mechanic is tellin me my starter is bad first off. so b4 i go spending $189 to fix it..i wanna hear wht u guys think
When my 3sfe spun a bearing that's the way it died. Harsh vibration then it just cut off. Did your engine lose power while you were giving it gas? If when you gave it gas it started to vibrate harsh then I could only assume that it's the same thing that happened to me and you have a spun bearing. As par as the starter issuue. Sometimes the flywheel gets ground down in places as well as the starter gear. I use to get a grind from time to time on my auto. Now here is the kicker. If you're trying to start it and it grinds hit the key a few more times. If it just keeps frinding and the engine isn't moving then it's siezed and it's either time for a rebuild or my favorite word SWAP! Why did I type all of that you're just gonna get a maxima anyway. Wait... wut....lol

The camry 3S-fe engine will not bent valves if belt is broken.
prior to doing repairs. the mechanic does not know what he is doing or he wants to milk your wallet.
1] with battery disconnected rotate the engine to make sure it is not frozen
2] inspect flexplate teethafter removal of the starter [or you can take out one bolt on the top of bellhousing and then bent out the steel flexplate cover to do it ]
the damaged tranny front pump or torque converter can also cause noise and can explain slipping.
Shut up doc it's time for a swap.lol but yeah I'd say listen to hime he's ase. Remove the flexplate covor and inspect the flywheel. Also I'd recommend starting it from under the hood. Just run a line straight from the positive battery terminal to the covered bolt on the front of the starter facing the radiator. That way you can see and hear what's going on. I was gonna say before the doc said it that the fe is non interference so the head doesn't need to come off.

I gonna shut up and become paid expert, $9 for answer
Not many car owners are having place for swaps; the price of used or pre-pulled engine here in CA is close to $500; so those who have no garage should have mechanic do it. As a result it costs about $1400 at least with 3 months warranty, which is not attractive deal.
You may have to tow it to the different place and do inspections I suggested.
have motor oil drained collected and checked for metal shavings; drop the tranny pan and look for the same. if lot of metal is present in both places the car may be too expensive to repair unless you do it yourself.
cash for clunkers is just about passed....but i doubt your car would qualify. my v6 is 1mpg over the allowed limit (19combined, 18 is rule).
unless you really love that ride, time for a new whip I say...the new camrys are great cars (dont get a v6)
I would do what Doc J has suggested, check for metal shavings in the oil. If there is anything, its probably time to look for a new rig. The high whine defiantly sounds like it could be the torque converter, though I've never heard of an engine not starting after the converter goes.
At 125k its probably over due for a new timing belt if it hasn't been replaced already. Though for both the torque converter and the timing belt to go at once sounds like a bad day...
Yea...was listed for $1100 but i got it for $900,s.o.b didnt wanna budge at all. so it a grey bluish color..grey interior..
here is the good stuff:
