2nd Generation 1989 Camry... a few questions

Hello,

I'm a newbee to the ToyotaNation forum and have a few questions.

I have a bad oil leak coming from the bottom of the timing belt cover and will be replacing the camshaft and crankshaft seals as well as the oil pump seal and gasket. The water pump and timing belt will be replaced also as they both have over 150,000 miles on them.

1) I wanted to know if the oil pan has to be removed from the engine to remove the oil pump and replace the gasket and seal? I have a 1989 Camry with the 3sfe 4 cylinder engine.

2) Do I need a spanner wrench to remove the camshaft timing pulley or is their another method that works just as well.

3) What type of puller do I need to remove the crankshaft pulley?

I have worked on cars before but have never tackled a timing belt job. I know I can get it done if I have the right tools and information.

Thanks for any help/info. you can provide.

Hi: I'm not sure about questions 2 and 3, but question 1 I believe Yes. If I'm correct, the oil pump is in the oil pan. The oil seal should be on the bottom of the engine block, underneath where the timing belt. I'm sorry I can't be more help. Good luck

The oil pump seal/gasket should be fine. I haven't heard of one of these leaking, so don't plan on changing that just yet. The pump itself should be in fine shape too.

As for the timing belt... The crank pully can be removed with a standard pulley puller (I think a steering wheel puller works too). There are two threaded holes in the crank pully for this purpose. I'm not sure on the cam gear. I know to get the bolt that holds the cam gear off, you can put a wrench on the cam inside the motor to keep it from spinning.

Hope that helps.

#1 You do NOT need to take pan off to get to the oil pump it is mounted on the FRONT on the engine under the t belt and w pump.

#2 No spanner wrench needed as you can take the valve cover off and hold the cam with a large wrench

#3 Any puller will work but I recomend taking the bolt off before taking the engine apart it makes it much easier to hold the engine from turning.

Use threadlock and tighten 10mm bolts with ONE HAND or you will snap them off.

make a drawing of the oil pump bolts and where they came from as the are different lengths.

mark the cam sprocket location . Line up the #1 plug on distributor .. line up the Crank to "O" mark on the timing cover....then when you take the top timing cover offf mark the cam and make same mark on the backing plate so you can line it up at the end of your job.

the oil pump is a small casting holding a drive gear and a big driven gear sits in the motor front cover, if the front cover is worn out as most are, you will have to pop the oil pan to get it off

Most Worn?

Out of all that I have done only ONE (1) was worn. All others came back to 40-60 Oil Pressure from just a replaced pump.
Your Choice...Good Luck!
