Cracked CV boots?

Went to a mechanic to have my AC retrofitted to R134A, and they also mentioned that the right and left outer CV boots are cracked.

He said it would be about $300 a boot! If I wanted to have it done...

What is a reasonable price to pay for this type of work? The car still handels fine, and I have not noticed any strange noises coming from the joints...

Not sure if its worth putting another $600 into the car, considering thats 1/2 of what it is worth...

You can have each axle replaced with a rebuilt axle for around $200-$220 each. This replaces both the axle and the cv joint (new boots included). This is the more common method of dealing with cracked or torn cv joint boots.

If these axles are bolted to the flanges rather then pushed into the tranny, you may get away with replacing the boots . You will need to do inner boots too , as they have to come out anyways.
for my car I found the car with rebuild axles and brand new boots on the junk yard, removed the boots and put them on my drivers side axle.[cost about $5+ $5 for grease tube ]

I was gonna say! My driver's side outer joint is clicking, so I priced them out and that's the price range I found. No way it should cost $300.

Anyone know any well known auto shop that will do this at a decent price? Also where could I buy a rebuilt axel?

What do you guys think about a little kit like this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1989-...lenotsupported

Seems cheap enough at $15 shipped. How easy do you think it is to DIY? Or how much would a shop charge me to put these boots on?

The $600 the guy quoted me for both CV boots done seems INSANELY expensive if they are really only $15 each including grease and clamps!

The e-bay stuff may have been sitting on the shelf too long; I 've experienced 2 premature failures of e-bay parts.
It took me 1 hour to do the boots on one side; done without using the shop lift.
it is easy to do if the car has bolt-on axles.

Brought my car in to Medas to have some muffler work done... The guy also mentioned that the front CV boots were cracked.

He said it would be $179 installed per side for brand new (not rebuilt) axels and boots, and probably a nice warranty. So I might just have them do it and use one of their coupons $20 off $200+.
