Need a new muffler

So a couple months ago I patched a rust hole in my muffler, and now the exhaust tip is about ready to fall off...

So I'm wondering about what are my options... Is it very hard to replace? I only have a couple smaller jacks what do I need to do the job?

Also, if I went and got a muffler from a junk yard, how much would it cost me? Thanks.

-Jason

Just go to a muffler shop and have them replace everything that needs replacing... The bolts are probably so rusty by now that its not work even trying to unbolt things.

They will charge me ~150$ installed. I'd rather do it myself for $20-30 for a used muffler. I've already spent $250 repairing the car in the last couple weeks... It ran fine for the first 10k I owned it, then all of the sudden... a new problem every week.

@ Doc J

Will any 4 cylinder sedan muffler work? I suppose I would need to do some welding or something to get the moutning hardware to fit properly?

The muffler section of the exhaust is easy to replace if the bolts are in good enough condition to remove easily.

You can unbolt the hangers from the body to more easily remove the rubber mounts off the car. If you need a lubricant to slide the rubber mounts off, use cheap cooking oil, not something petroleum based so you don't ruin the rubber.

Any 4-cylinder sedan muffler (non-Alltrac) from '87-'91 will work just fine.

Well I ended up calling up Medas... I found the papers that said my grandfather (the one that gave me the car) replaced the muffler 5 years ago, only 15k miles ago.

The guy I talked to (owner) of the Medas franchise said technically the warranty only covers the original owner of the car, but since he is a close relative he said he will split the cost of the muffler.

So I ended up getting them to replace it with a brand new muffler w/ lifetime warranty for only $55 +tax. Very happy with the generosity of the guy at Medas, as well as how much quieter the car is.

I'd also estimate it to have 20% more power (at least when accelerating) probably because the lack of back pressure with the rusted out muffler.
