2nd Generation 88 camry- Tachometer

Hello and welcome to a continuation of my long list of problems!

I have had this vehicle for about 5 years now and i had gotten used to the fact it has no tach, but for the past year and a half I have been driving an 06 scion tc and driving it HARD. Adjusting back to the camry has been slow and it has been gnawing at me that i don't know EXACTLY where the rpms are at.

If anyone knows how to wire in a tach to a car that did not come with one stock.
If anyone knows if i could get a guage cluster form a similar vehicle.

It's always nice to give good news, so here goes:

As long as you get a tach from a Camry with the same engine, it's a simple plug-n-play. The tach wire is already in your harness, it's simply not connected to anything now. If you can find a tach guage cluster from another gen2 Camry, just swap it in. I can't even imagine how anyone drives without one (but then again I've never owned an auto trans)...

If you can't source one at a wrecker, try eBay...these things are plentiful, and usually pretty cheap. Good luck!

And as a double-good point... you can often swap the speedo section of your cluster over to the new cluster with tach and keep your stock odometer and everything.

Thank you very much for your help. i have searched my engine bay up and down, back and forth and haven't been able to find an input or wire or whatever. I've looked for other gen 2's in the junk yards but to no avail, here in Alaska its rare to find one that doesn't run. It hasnt been THAT big of a deal so maby i didn't look hard enough. ill go buy an aftermarket tach.(has never had an automatic either.)

Its an 88 4cyl 5speed just in case that changes anything. 287600 miles and climbing daily

Instrument cluster? Pretty easy. Unscrew those screws holding the clear plsatic cover, that lifts out the whole trim around the dash inc the hazard lights and cruise control if you have it. Then there are more screws behind it mounting the instrument cluster.

If you're going from gauges to digital, then there's a few more steps.

There is a blank plug located on the top of the distributor with a cap that a male spade connector can plug into for a diagnostic or aftermarket tach. Its the plug hanging free - not the other thing about the same size that is a capacitor for the ignition system...
