How to remove cable shifter bushings?

I've been trying for the past 20mins but can't for the life of me get them off. Are they supposed to come off? If i take them off, can i get them back on? It seems as though those rubber lips hanging over the metal ring end are stopping me from sliding it out as they don't flex much.

Help?

if it doesn't come out use a bigger hammer. and yes they come off... use a small screw driver and pry it out... i never putted them back on.. i took them out to replace them with metal bushings.

In a similar thread in a different sub-forum, someone said that it's much easier to mis-shift if you don't follow the gate (due to the the solid metal bushings). This is already happening with my car as everyone(except me and my uncle) who has drives it crunches when down-shifting into 2nd(only gear that does this). Do you know what would cause this? Would the solid bushings make this worse in my case?
