Oil Consumption Concern

Hey all;

I changed my engine oil mid last month... and now.. i'm running low... AFAIK... i have a dizzy seal leak... and my oil bung is cross threaded so oil seeps past it slowly... if u peer under ... u can see 2 or 3 small puddles on the oil pan... But i'm wondering if those two leaks would've caused the oil to leak out that fast... (10W-30 grade) ... How wud i know if my engine is burning oil... I see no blue smoke at the tail pipe... whether at start up.. idle .. acceleration or cruising... So would these leaks cause this to happen this fast...?

- Stanno.

We need more information to respond. How many miles have you driven since that last oil change and how low are you in quarts?

My trip meter isn't working due to a faulty speedo cable... When i last checked the dip stick (last night) there was no oil on it... I bought 2 quarts of oil this morning and topped it up... The oil light stayed on for a second more after start up yesterday...which led me to check the dipstick... Sorry i can't give more info.... Generally, i drive from home to work and back home again... probably 5 or 6 miles a day ... approximately...

That's means you are driving 10-12 miles a day for 30 days. Let's say you are going 300-400 miles in that month. If the level was full at the oil change and wouldn't register on the dipstick now, you have used at least 2 quarts of oil in those 300-400 miles. That is a tremendous amount of oil to be leaking. My guess is that "crossed threaded bung" is the main problem. Remember your oil is under pressure so that it can be pumped throughout the engine. I would check the oil level daily if you are going to continue driving this car, and get that crossed threaded bung retapped or replaced asap. Let's hope it's the bung and not the block threads that are ruined. After getting it fixed continue to monitor the oil consumption to determine if that was the main cause.

Also, with your climate and the oil loss, I would be adding 10W-40 or even 20W-50 oil until you get this leak problem solved.

Like clockwork... every morning before departure i check the level... this last time was the lowest i've ever seen it go... A mechanic friend of mine said i should come have him repair it this saturday... Pretty sure it's the bung cuz i cleaned the area & traced where the oil is seeping from... & also... when i tighten the bung (by hand)... i can feel it turn freely then it gets resistant ... then frees up again before finally goin all the way in...

... I forgot that the engine lubrication system is pressurized somewhat... so i'm now realising that the oil ... altho it may had looked like small amounts when parked... could've been squirting out like crazy while driving...

Appreciate the response Mike... i'll be sure to monitor it afterwards...

Already did that... I used engine degreaser tho... Lord's willing i'm having it repaired this weekend... Can't recall seeing any wet oily areas around the oil pressure switch but i'll double check..

New developments... The friend/mechanic who was to look on the engine had to postpone due to emergency... but now... the leak has gotten worse... whenever i park somewhere for a while i come back to see a small puddle of engine oil... this time... running down from in between the engine and transmission... some is either contacting the hot muffler of engine block... cuz burning oil was seen this morning when i opened the hood after stopping off at my son's daycare... ... now my motor is dry of oil again..!!! I'm assuming that this is the rear crank seal... is there any way to change this without removing the tranny..?
