European Union Toyota models using A140L transmission

I have two Automatic Gen 2 SV21 Camrys here in Ireland. Unfortunately, both of the trannys are causing problems. They are both A140L, one's 1989 (110k miles) and the other 1991 (270k miles). Both engines are 3SFE.

Which of the Toyota models use the A140L? I think the easiest option is to replace tranny with a low mileage unit from a scrap yard. The problem in Ireland is the Camry wasn't very popular and there are none in the scrap yards. I was told the Rav 4 from 1995-97 and the 1987-91 Celica will fit. Can anyone confirm this or add any other models that would fit? E.g. Would a gen3 fit?

I found this app guide which has all the transmission designations:

http://transtec.com/selector_guide/Toyota.htm

It does list the A140E for the 94-99 Celica GT 2.0L, so maybe you're correct here. It also lists the A140E/L for the 83-01 Camry 1.8/2.0/ 2.2L. Could I use an A140E instead of the A140L, i.e. what other parts would I need? Did the Gen3 Camry use an A140L at any point or did it just use the A140E?

not sure what you'd have to change... the E is electronic contoled while the L is mechanical controlled... could be as simple as getting the tranny + tranny ecu but i'm not really sure... the E was used all the way up to the 97 camry so it's easily found more than the L

@DoctorJ
I found this thread:

compatibility of a A140L and a A140E

In it, you posted this:

Quote:
No , the A140e will not work unless you install the electronic control unit, wiring harness and throttle position sensor with it. The A140L can work instead of A140e
Would you have any more details on approximately where these components are located in a Gen 3? Is the wiring harness connected from the Tranny ECU to the Tranny itself? Can you say what the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) looks like? Is it possible to use the PWR/NORM button that the gen3 has?

There are definitely more gen3 camrys around here. The A140E would probably be a good upgrade.

Thanks to you both for contributing, it's got so quiet on this forum.
