Speedometer drops to zero

I have 1990 Camery V6. The speedometer works only if the gas peddle is depressed. Otherwise, it would drop down to zero instaneously. Please help.

Your car has a mechanical speedo, so it probably has a worn part somewhere in the system. The most likely area is the gear that goes into the transmission. It is located on the top/back of the differential housing of the transmission. You should be able to see it come out of the firewall, to a screw-together fitting, down to the top of the transsmission to another screw-together fitting then into the transmission. Take all those parts apart and check for damage.

Hi, CHarlie
Thanks for your suggestion. However, I have already checked that part a few days ago when I was replacing the o-ring to stop a leak. But I will go check it out again. Are there any other mechanical (such as vaccum) and/or electrical connection to the speedometer?
Regards,
Jonathan

There are no other connections. It is all direct mechanical. Just hope its not the speedo ring gear in the trans... All the other parts are easy to replace.
