1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
1988 Toyota Camry 3sfe 260,000 kms. NO ABS. Front discs, Rear drums.
Rebuilt 2 front calipers. Changed master cylinder.
Problem --> pedal goes to the floor with low pedal pressure
Everything is bled properly, no air. What I have come to find is that when I remove the caliper from the left side of the car (US drivers side) and press on the pedal, the piston DOES NOT move. It just pulsates and lets the pedal go down to the floor with no pressure at all. If I block the line with a vise grip, the pedal remains stiff. I removed this caliper and tried it on the other side, it works with no problems, the pedal is stiff with the other line blocked.
What kind of problem am I dealing with here? This is the 2nd new master cylinder Ive tried this week, in hopes that it would solve the problem. and 2 freshly rebuilt calipers. Could it be a proportioning valve?
thanks for all your help, I've been messing around with this for quite some time now....
You can pump to your hearts content, but the caliper piston just barely pulsates and the pressure never builds. Caliper is fine, I removed it and tried it on the other side and it functions. There is no pressure being built on the left front side of the car.
Possible restriction in the rubber brake hose to that caliper? It may have collasped internally. I'm really guessing here on things that can cause what you are experiencing, other than the master itself.
No pressure on front left caliper, no pressure on rear right wheel cylinder. Someone on another forum has told me this indicates a proportioning valve.
I'm going to try and pick one up from the auto parts tomorrow. any idea of how much they cost?
If you buy new they can be pricey (well over $100). Do you have a selve-serve scrap yard in Montreal? It should only cost $5 or $10 if you pull it yourself...it's against the firewall, just above the steering rack.

Honda my A$$, you just can't kill a Yota...
why would you have a soft pedal if the fluid pressure isn't allowed to leave the system. how is your master cylinder and what condition is the brake fluid in.
master cylinder is brand new as mentioned in first post, brake fluid has been flushed many times this week while trying to figure out what the problem is. thought the first master was defective, got another one, same problem.
how can the valve be that expensive? the insurance companies in quebec do not allow you into the yards here, so they have a crazy monopoly on parts and they charge usually half the new price.
I'm not an expert on these things, but since they're sealed units I would doubt they can be rebuilt by you or me...
I'm sorry to hear about the monopoly insurance companies have there...c'est folie. If I didn't have access to cheap u-pull-it scrap yards over the past 17 years, none of my cars would have lasted half as long as they have.
Other threads on TN have stated that the proportion valves for 5th gen Celicas are direct swaps for Corolla GTS (88-91) and 7th Gen Celica valve assemblies...and I believe it. Even the prop valve on my V6 Camry (four-wheel disc) looks identical to the one in my Celica.
If you can source one from another (more common) Toyota of the same vintage, it may end up costing a LOT less...I hope you have some luck.

thanks for all your help Tim But no matter what, I am so stuck right now....
I tried cleaning mine. to no avail....
No parts stores have ever had a listing for one.
You would fall off your chair if you knew the dealers price!
I have to find someone on here to help me out! Do you know of a yard that you could pull one? I wonder if anyone knows what other cars use a similar valve...
Okay, I'm going to the wreckers today after work to see my friend...I'll take a look and see if I can find one. If I can, I'll get it for free...then you would only have to pay the shipping. But don't get your hopes up just yet, I don't know for sure that there is one!
While I'm there I'll weasel my way onto the computer to check the Hollander interchange. If the valve is listed at all, it will tell me what other models swap-over for sure...
I'll keep you posted.

wow, awesome. thanks!
Thats extremely valuable information if you can figure out what models swap over!
Well today was a bust, I worked late and didn't make it to the yard...I'll go tomorrow after work, though, and I'll get whatever info I can.
Sorry for the delay, I should know better than to say anything until after I've found the info you need!
