engine whine when I turn wheel at low speeds

When I turn my steering wheel at low speeds my engine whines. I thought it rev'ed the engine but my tac doesn't go up. When I'm at higher speeds I can't hear the whining. I thought I would start with power steering but I have no clue what to start with. Thanks

It could also be normal. When you turn the wheel at low speeds the power steering pump must work harder to give you steering assist. That may be what you are hearing. It really depends on how loud it is. As the others have said, check the fluid level and condition. I would also recommend that you try to find another Camry with your year, engine and transmission and listen to how that car sounds when turning at low speeds.

I put fluid in when I first got car (back i april '09). just checked fluid again it was low. I found the leak, fixed the leak, drained the fluid , and put new fluid in. It seems to be working. thanks for the advice!
