2nd Generation Short Shifter

Hopefully this will answer a lot of people's questions.. I've been researching this for like.. 2 days. and yes, I've used the search function...

I understand that there's some options for short shifters.. but i've yet to read straight answers.

Does a 7th gen Celica ( 2000- 2005 ) stock short shifter fit on the gen 2?

Does a newer gen Camry's shifter fit on the gen 2?

I just can't find a straight answer.. and i've found some of both.

Thanks for all the help! When i get an answer and buy it, maybe i'll do a DIY write-up on the installation if i can figure it out for myself. haha

i've used the 7th gen in my camry it works... but it won't work with your stock boot. i'm pretty sure other gen camry will fit also

the aftermarket short shifter for the celica won't fit unless you put spacers below is what i heard... but i can see why

You can get 7th gen celica short throw shifters on ebay for $20 with bushings that raise the base of the shifter.

I've always wanted to put one into my Camry but then i step back and think "Putting this is will speed up my shifts....but the car still goes damn slow "

1) True that. I could make some comment about a bonus of the long throw, but i won't.

2) I guess they'd be alright, so long as you don't slam it into gears all the time.

I didn't make the comment, so don't worry lol. It has to do with copping a feel/s from girls sitting in the front passenger seat I guess it won't work too well in LHD with only 5th and R being close to them (and how often you shift between 4th and 5th). But for us RHD'ers, it's 1st and 2nd. Gotta love city driving heh heh heh. I'll hide my face in shame now

don't take it seriously

Hope to hell it breaks in such a way that you're still able to shift or shove a rod/pen/sitck/long bolt in the ball

It's pretty easy.

Remove shift knob/ball (it screws off)
Remove dust boot (lift it at the front or rear, could pop off).
I think you need to remove the centre console(2 screws in the bin) and 2 screws(one on either side) near where your right thigh(for driver) would be. Lift the sides away and the ttim up from the bottom edge
Then you can remove that bit that surrounds the shifter + the little pocket in front of the shifter. There are 2 screws way further up near the dash, but lower and on that piece of trim.
You should now be able to remove the trim surrounding it.

Remove those clips holding the shift cables onto the lever. These sometimes fly and you don't want to lose the one that holds the bottom one on.
Slide the two cables off.

You should be able to work it out from there. There are 4 bolts holding the gear lever on with a cover and there are 4 bolts holding the shifter base/assembly to the chassis.

For a short shifter, you could always cut the factory gear lever and tap a thread onto it. Mind you, it will require a bit more force to shift unless you get a weighted shift knob.

I just looked over my local junkyard's cart list.. and there's about 30 camrys in there. ranging from years 84 - 99, and about 5 celicas ranging from 79 to 91. will any of these fit in my '90 camry that would act as a short shifter?
