2nd Generation door jamb switchs

i have a 91 camry wagon. the rubber switches between the door and the car are wearing out i assume because when i open the drivers or passangers doors the dome lights wont always come on or they will come on several seconds after i open the door. now is this definatly the switch? or could it be a different issue? also the back doors when i open them the light doesnt come on at all. are those switches wired to the dome light or not?

It is most likely the switches.

Try wiggling the button through the rubber cover to see if the light goes on/off with that. It is mostly likely just dirt build up inside the switch, so there is probably a way to clean it...

You probably have to remove the door jam trim and the upper seat side bolster to get to it. I don't think the wire inside the car is long enough to pull the plug outside the car.

I have to wiggle my rear door switches to get them to turn the lights on... the fronts are reliable still, at least.

-Charlie

PS. If you have an alarm on the car, the non-working door switches will render that part of the alarm somewhat useless...

Is the bolster the "part of seat", if you will, that doesnt fold down closest to the door? if yes how do i remove it i cant find any where its connected.

Yeah, its the part of the seat that doesn't fold down.

I have only done it on sedans... but the wagon should be similar. You have to pop the lower seat section up (pull the tabs on the front of the seat and lift the front). There is a bolt at the bottom of the bolster that you must remove, then the bolster can be slid up and out.
