The cam mark is hard to see due to oil/dirt on the bearing cap. If you would be able to wipe it somehow it going to be easier to see; it looks to me like the timing mark is off and shows in the large hole [its reflection is seen in upper left corner on the mirror]

Doctor J,

Please have a look at this pic; I took off the cam sprocket and wiped off as much junk as I could. It is my understanding the correct mark is #2, that should at 12 o"clock if the engine was standing upright? Thank you

Thanks, Dr. J. I have another question: The manual says about gaskets when reinstalling t/belt covers; but Toytota dealership does not know about need of such gasket. Is it OK to apply some RTV sealant, or no seal is necessary?

For 3sfe on 87-91 camry: these gaskets are to keep the dust out of the timing belt; the covers are sold with the gaskets attached, so no separate part number is available for the gaskets. Unless badly torn, they can be wiped from oil, degreased with acetone or alcohol and then glued to the cover using trim adhesive such as 3M. After the covers are installed, the gaskets are sandwiched between the cover and engine so they should stay at place.

Put new t/belt, The marks on crank and camshafts are aligned properly. But still wont start. I don't give up easily but I think this time I tried all avenues. Perhaps last hing to try is to replace fuel pump. I don't know if I damaged something, but ot look like when I juimp Fp and B+, the jump wire gets hot and I don't really hear any pump sound.

After cranking for a bit, are the spark plugs wet or do they smell like gas? Have you verified that all the other connectors are plugged in (except that one two pin gray one)?

if jumper is getting hot, the gas pump may be jammed.
Instead of the pump you may hook up 12 volts cordless tool without battery or car vacuum cleaner. Jump the terminals an see if it runs. Use 12 v battery pack from cordless tool and hook up to the gas pumpif it does not run, momentary reverse polarity. [blue wire is +, white with black is -].This may unjam the pump but the new pump must be installed.
A quick fuel pressure check is to observe the screw on the top of pulsation damper.
