Backfiring when attempt to start with starting fluid

I am trying to get the thing started with starting fluid. I stuck long screwdriver in AFM to jam the door opened and sprayed the fluid into airbox. The ether/air mix gets ignited in the airbox, with loud pops and flashes, although the throttle is opened when cranking. What I am doing wrong? How can I get the starter mix to the combustion chamber? Thank you

It sounds like the mechanical timing of the motor is wayyyyy off. There is nothing in the intake tract that could light the starting fluid unless its getting to the spark plug. Based on Dr. J's response to your timing mark question, the timing belt is probably put on wrong. Get the timing belt put on there correctly and go from there.

You should remove the large tube leading to the throttle body itself and spray the starting fluid in there. You don't have to use a screwdriver to bend back the throttle valve, just spray it in there. Then reisntall the big tube and try to start it.

Thanks folks,

I tried to spray it directly into the throttle body with air box pipe removed, and it did the same thing - backfired. It almost looked like the car angrily telling me I was doing something wrong!

I think you are right: The ignition timing is way of because probably t/belt jumped one or more teeth. Let me take it off, wipe out the sooth from the bearing cap, reinstall the belt and make new pics.

Yes, it turns fine. I am installing new t/belt; I am hoping that should rectify timing problem.
