2nd Generation 2.0 Is loseing a lot of oil over time .

Hi guys , hope everyone is doing ok , well i have a problem my 3sfe is losing oil , i have talked to several guys about it , but im still not sure on how to solve the problem . It has about 262,xxx amount of miles , i recently had the valve cover gasket replaced . I recently received a freshly redone cly head (Thanks Phat91Le) i was thinking i should just drop the rebuilt head on the car . So i dont know what the problem is maybe it is just the valve guides ? I also heard from my buddies that when they are behind me that the camry is throwing out bluish smoke at high rpms ......

Valve guide seals would mostly be noticable on startup - a big puff of smoke after sitting overnight... At 262k, they are probably going (or gone, or have already been replace 2-3x). That doesn't lead to a large amount of oil loss though.

You will probably want to check the compression of your motor. I would suspect a worn bottom end (rings). This would often show up as blue smoke under power (like you mention) and blue smoke on over-run (off the gas, but in gear coming to a stop. Bad valve guids could also do that).

A low-mileage JDM engine might be in your future...

A compression test won't tell you much about the oil control rings since they are the bottom set of rings on the piston in where the compression rings are on top. Have a leak down test done, it will be more accurate to pinpoint the problem whether it's in the head or the block.

@ 262K miles, it wouldn't be unusual for your engine to burn oil.

ok hopefully i can keep this engine alive for another year . it was leaking before from the valve cover so i replaced the gasket. i ll have to check it out or i proably should just bring it to a shop to get the comp test and a leak check... idk if they will charge....

How much oil are you losing? If it is still less than 1 quart every 1000 miles, the motor will probably keep going for a while. I went for over 2 years and 30k miles daily driving my Alltrac while it was burning about a quart every 2k miles...

I have 2 camry's, one will 'use oil' and the other does both, uses and leaks oil, I think from the rear main seal area because the car puddles oil after you have driven it for a while. Have used the oil sealer product on the market but it still wont stop the rear main seal leaks. Not wanting to pull apart the trans/engine to do that job, way too much work unless someone knows some shortcuts/tricks to do this quickly??? The camry that leaks from the rear main seal is an 91 auto and has 250K miles and purrs like a kitten. Just a rusty old beater to us at this point. May take us to 300K unless the Northeast Mass rust consumes it underneath!
