Exclamation 39mpg!!!

Took a road trip 2 weeks ago and managed some pretty killer gas mileage for my 1989 Gen2 Auto trans, w/ 154k.

With 1 passenger and 100lbs of luggage in the trunk, we drove straight from Turlock, CA to Redding, CA (Aprox 260miles). I drove at a pretty steady 65MPH the whole way, and we didn't stop a single time. 39MPG!

On the way down, I managed 35MPG. We stopped a few times, and got stuck in some traffic, so we set the GPS to route us using some country roads for the remaining 50 miles of the trip.

I'm presently surprised at how well my stock camry does on the highway as long as speeds are reasonable.

My previous best MPG was 29MPG!! So I shattered that record! That was when I use to drive 50 miles a day... 40 highway, 10 city.

This was the longest trip I've taken in my camry since I got the car a year and a half ago...

I'm still not very impressed with the city MPG. I average about 22MPG city. Work is only 3.5 miles away and almost all my driving is city. Sometimes some traffic congestion.

It's amazing how much highway and city MPG differs! Much more drastically than EPA ratings...

Your highway mpg is not unusual for that generation if speeds are not too high. My former 89 Camry would get 40 mpg at 65 mph(36 mpg with AC at same speed). The short city ride doesn't allow for engine to warm up enough to provide better mpg.

I wonder how much better it will be when you sit behind a truck

But seriously, don't do it - it's dangerous.

When I had my gen2 (1988 LE 4-cyl), I got 36 MPG on of my long road trips to California and Eastern Washington.

I usually averaged about 29-30 MPG on a regular basis. I live 14 miles to work which is about 70% freeway, 30% streets.

My 2000 LE got 27 MPG regularly when new, but it's about 25.5-26 MPG on a regular basis now. On the same long trips to Eastern WA and California, I managed 32-33 MPG.

2.5 liter v6, according to Consumer Reports, only got 31 mpg on highway, and back then they were testing at 55 mph.
