89 Toyota Camry 4cyl 5 sp

I have a 89 Camry with 270,000 miles on it. The clutch started slipping a while back and i've been debating on if I should replace it or not. This thing is real rough..lots of minor problems, but it ran good....until yesterday.

As I was pulling out of my driveway, I heard a noise from under the car and I coasted to a stop. I lost all my gears. With the clutch out I can hear noise from the transmission but when the clutch is depressed it stops. It acts like the linkage has disconnected or broken, (had this happen when I first got the car, a retainer clip came out and lost 1st and 2nd) but I checked at the shifter and at transaxle and they are both intact and moving.

Any ideas or suggestions? Don't want to get rid of this thing...still getting 30mpg with it.

So when you step on the clutch, do you hear a whirring noise? And while still on the clutch, it;s still not letting you shift into a gear?

I think your throwout bearing is gone. If that's the case, it;s definitely time for a new clutch and you'll need to either tow it to a shop or DIY at home. Your car isn't going anywhere.

When you step on the clutch the whirring noise stops and when you release it it starts up. so it sounds like the clutch is working. You can shift to any gear with the eng running and the clutch out just as easy as with the clutch in. The transmission is not engaging.
