91 Camry distributer o-ring

I have a 91 camry with a 2.0 engine that has a distributer leak. I have replaced the distributer o-ring. While the leak is not as bad as before, it still does leak a little. A friend suggested just using a thicker o-ring. Has anyone had any success doing so?

Thumbs up

get the timing where you want it and take a pick and scratch a line on the housing and the head, take it out and wipe off all oil and smear ultra grey or black silicone on the flat surface on the head around the hole and put it back in and align the scratched line, let dry, only wish all the other oil leaks were this easy to plug up

Did you replace the o-ring with one from the dealer? If not, I would try that first. O-rings can be made from different materials. Some are more resistant to oil than others.

My 1990 has the same problem. I'm just taking it to the shop in the morning. I don't have the tools to do myself, or the time. I was quoted $225 for rebuilt distributor installed.

Many years ago, my distributor O-ring went bad around 100K. I changed it. It started leaking again around 130K miles. When I checked, that's when I realized the oil was leaking through the distributor.

Since I wasn't going to keep the car for long, I bought a used distributor for about $100

This seems to be a common problem. If you are handy guy, you can buy a distributor seal kit for 3S-FE engines for a reasonable price.
