Bump the timing up a bit (make sure it isn't pinging). You won't get much HP from mods though, sadly. Make sure its in good running order and you should be getting around or over 30mpg in mixed and highway driving.

Get the adapter plate from Ebay. They are really cheap.

Adjusting the timing is just like any other motor... Warm up motor, loosen distributor, jumper the "T" and "E1" connections in the diagnostic connector in the engine bay (this is the only 'secret), use a timing light to adjust the timing up a few degrees (12-15* BTDC), remove jumper, tighten distributor and go for a test drive.

Ok i hooked up the timing light jumped TE1 and E1. I set the timing where it runs and sounds its best. The CEL is flashing with the jumper in. Is this normal?

Sounds normal.

Without the jumper in place, the ECU is moving the ignition timing around to keep a good idle. With the jumper in place, it leaves the timing at the base timing (while at idle, at least).

What is "a little high" for the idle? Factory idle should be 650-700rpm, depending. This is with all lights/accessories/fans/etc. off.

You need to check and adjust the timing on a fully warm engine at an idle less than 1000rpm.

1500rpm is normal for a cold start (as much as 2k rpm on very cold days) and should settle down as the engine warms up.

The motor is running slugish in 1st and 2nd unless i take it to 3000+ rpm. Is this from me adjusting the timing? Ill pull the plugs and check them out.
