1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My daughter is now driving my '91 Camry, and she said that it's stalling out on her during hard stops (how many time this has happened, I don't know ).
It's an automatic, 4 cyl, right around 100k miles. Runs good otherwise. My wife said she should just be more careful driving, which would be a good idea.
Seems as though I've seen this issue with other cars as well, coming to a hard stop and the engine stalls.
Any idea what could be causing this?
Check for code "51" if it present, the TPS may need asjustment [4pin type] or replacement [3pin];
if no code is present, check the intake hose for cracks and Dashpot for the throttle valve, if eqipped.

Jumper wire the terminals TE1 and E1 in the data link connector under the hood, turn on the ignition switch (don't start engine) and count the blinks of the CEL. That will give you the trouble code.
The car is OBD1 and Autozone will not be able to pull the codes. You will have to jumper TE1 and E1 as Invincibility stated and count the flashes. The procedure and what the codes mean will be in any manual. If you do not have a manual you can downlaod one for free at the top of the Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. The manuals are stickied there at the top and are a free download. Download the generation 2 manual.
