USA 88 Camry - starting issue

Greetings from North Carolina! I have an 88 Camry with new starter and good battery and new timing belt. Starts on the coldest of days but will occasionally just die while driving it. This happened to #3 son last week on his way to school. It would not start after driving. I came back a few hours later....started right up and took it home. It has not started since. It has full electrical functions but will not crank. I have rocked it....rolled it...moved the shifter and steering wheel...what else? Anyway, some hints please. Car has over 200K but runs fine otherwise.

2nd Generation A Good Start

go to camrystuff.com and pik Gen2 section then go to troubleshooting. Thi is a good start.

Dont know about the stalling but....

Sounds like it is the no click , no start issue Dr. J talks about.

Try
  1. Pulling Emergency brake OUT OF GEAR have someone sit in the drivers seat with foot on brake.
  2. hooking a small wire on the Pos + side of the battery
  3. Pulling the little clip wire going to the front of the starter
  4. touch the wire to the that terminal with key "on"
if it starts then the Starter Relay ,Neutral safety switch or ignition is out

Try tapping that "new" starter's solenoid with a wrench or small hammer while someone holds the key in the start position. If the car now starts, you have varified the common worn starter solenoid contacts problem. If that is the case, do a search on this forum for "starter contacts" and read up on the problem and it's cures.

USA 88 Camry will not crank

Plenty of power to the cab, including lights, radio, etc. It will not crank. This is what I know:

Starter has been bench tested.
Battery has been bench tested.
Good cables and terminals
Battery is grounded to frame and engine
The starter will not crank when I jump it straight from battery with both key on and off.
All attempts have been done with brake on and off, emergency brake on and off.
There is no clicking in the solonoid but there is a clicking at the fuse/relay box by the battery - I can feel it but not sure which it is even after pulling each and turning the key.
The starter wire has been pulled and tested - no power is coming from it.

I believe the power is getting to the engine bay because of the clicking sound from the relay box by the battery.

When you run a wire directly to the small spade terminal on the starter from the battery it still doesn't crank? Hmmm...

Time to pull it apart and check the contacts, etc.

USA Checked it out already

The starter was taken out and bench tested so there is nothing wrong with starter and solenoid.

Anyother thoughts?
