Cool high engine speed

I have an 84 Camry, 2L, with a high engine speed that won't go down. The accelerator cable is not stuck, the air valve tests out good. I don't know the diagnosis codes and the engine light does not stay on.

It's not just an idle speed problem. Even if you drive the car beyond an idle, it'll keep accelerating like it's floored, though the pedal doesn't stay down. I replaced the pressure regulator because I found a new one cheap but it made no difference.

Any ideas?

Somehow, extra air is getting into the engine... so, there are only a few possibilities.

Make sure the throttle plate is actually fully closing (pull off the intake hose and check).

Check the dynamic operation of the throttle (with the engine off) by hand in the engine bay. Make sure it returns to the fully closed position quickly.

What did you do to check out the air valve? (I assume you mean the idle air control valve?)

Thanks.

To check the air valve, with engine running cool, I pinched the hose to make sure the RPMs would drop. Then with the engine warm, I pinched it to make sure it doesn't drop too much (more than 100 RPM). Then I checked the heat coil resistance of the air valve and it was within specs of 40-60 ohms. These tests came out fine. I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and it made no difference. I didn't think that was it but it was next on the checklist for high idle speed and I had one so I tried it. This is more than a high idle speed though, it's very fast. Like flooring or almost flooring the gas pedal. The throttle plate seems to be closing fine.

Cool Problem solved!

It turned out to be the cruise control solenoid. With the vacuum disconnected from the cruise control box, the car runs fine again. I won't have cruise control until I want to spring for a new one. Maybe never.

cheers.
