Hello there,
Do you know where the Idle Speed Control Valve is located on my 87 Toyota Camry 5 speed 2.0? I ask this because I think it might be the cause of my idle problem that I did a recent post about on here? Please advise me as I can't find it thanks.
Dave
It's called the idle air control valve and it is located under the throttle body. It is actually attached to the throttle body. If you want to try cleaning it while still on the car, remove the big tube leading to the throttle body. In the base of the throttle body you will see a square or diamond shaped hole. That is actually a port that leads to the idle air control valve. Spray the cleaner liberally down in to that port. Then reinstall the big tube. Wait 15 or 20 minutes while the cleaner soaks and then start the car. See if that helps your idle problem.
Hello there,
I already did what you said cleaned it throroughly and is still making a low idle only when the car is hot. Someone suggested on the forum to check the ISC Idle speed control valve. They also suggested to check the idle air by-pass valve do you know where that is located on the car? Also do you think the ISC/IAC needs to be replaced how does one tell if the iac is bad or not?
The best advice I can give you is to get hold of a manual and run the diagnostic tests listed in the manual for these items. If you don't have a manual you can download one for free at the top of the Camry forum over at AutomotiveForums.com. There are Toyota factory service manuals for each generation stickied at the top of that forum. Download the generation 2 manual.
hope bumping this is okay, im having this exact same problem. was wondering if a solution was found?
low idle while warm and engine cuts out. wont start again till cold.

Nope NOT Soved very frustrated too about this. I have replaced a lot of parts here..... New Distributor don't know what else to look for. I am going to go back and check for vaccum leak in lines I might have missed that the 1st time around checking for leaks. Please let me know/us know if anyone on here can help us resolve this problem thanks.

Have you tried turning up the idle via the air screw on the throttle body ... ?
NO That is a good idea although it won't work. Not to mention that is not the correct way to fix things. It would not work because no matter how high the idle is set at the idle drops so low that sometimes the car cuts off so even with the idle high it would still drop/cut off. Great idea though but trust me it still won't fix or stop the problem. Besides so far to get the car running when the idle drops on me I just rev up the engine getting the RPM'S high then take off real fast.
@ hardyrxp....

this is actually exactly what my mechanic did yesterday. drove the car around nyc for two hours, plenty of stop and go idling with not a single problem.
i still wonder what originally caused my cars idle to drop by lower than it had been for the last little while but for now, this seems to have fixed the issue.
another upside for me, with a power hungry car stereo, now at idle my alternator actually charges where as before my alternator wouldnt charge until the idle went up.
the only big downside i can think of is worse gas mileage due to a higher idle? plus whatever issue might have been the original cause still going undiagnosed ...

I'd try disconnecting the battery... to reset the ecu... then do a driving test ... drive and stop the car repeatedly at a speed higher than 10km/h.... or just start the engine and allow it to idle for 30 secs and turn the engine off repeatedly...
The manual states ..."By doing this, idle data will be stored in the ISC and the idle rpm will be at specified value"
You can try that... you really have nothing to lose... nothing tried nothing done...
