Strange Issue

As of late, the tranny wont upshift to O/D. Whenever it reaches the shift-point that it would normally up-shift from 3rd to O/D, the ECL illuminates and stays on until i back off the accelerator, then it goes back off until it reaches that rpm in 3rd again.

I ran a OBD test and got normal code.

Help please, I am to make a long distance trip, and driving on a highway in 3rd would be annoying with the engine singing for another gear.

Hmmm...

What year is your car? Does it also has the 'PWR'/'NORM' option? Trim level?

Sounds like the 4th/OD gear isn't engaging. Solenoid for the OD might not be working?

It's a 1990 JDM Lumiere G. It does have the power and normal transmission modes. However since my post, i've been doing some digging myself.

The temp sensor that operates my fan has been damaged at the wire so the fans run straight all the time. I read in the service manual that O/D will not engage if engine temp is under 122 degrees Celsius and according to my temp gauge, it's most times stopped at a 1/4 way, closer to the c due to the straight fans. I've not been able to test if it's actually the fan causing it indirectly as yet, haven't found a replacement sensor. But it still doesn't explain the ECL that comes on.

As you mentioned he pwr and norm modes, i had an issue before regarding the pwr mode. I used to drive in this mode and after a while, i started getting a ECL in 3rd. It was suggest that it might have been ign timing. Still haven't checked it yet, still looking for someone with a timing light. So until then, to be safe, i drove in norm mode, and wasn't getting that issue............. until now. it just started doing the same thing that it was doing in pwr recently. kinda wanna get rid of it. I don't like seeing that ECL illuminate, even tho it goes out after i back off. still annoying tho.

Well it seems that the temp was the issue. Despite the two fans running all the time (while the ign is on) once we got up on the highway, the O/D started kicking in.

-Thanks
