Ignition Timing

'91 Camry, 3S-FE.

I just reinstalled my distributor after replacing the dist shaft oil seal.

The service manual says to jump the E1 and TE1 terminals at the service connector before setting the timing. When I do that the rpm drops and the engine dies. I was able to hold the engine speed up enough to set the timing, but it has me wondering if something else is amiss.

The car seems to run fine.

This has been a problem for a long time, so I don't believe it's related to my work on the distributor.

Thanks!!

Paul
