1988 3SFE 5 speed with high idle

Hello,

I'm finally driving a 5 speed after 3 previous automatic driven Camrys. Its a 4 cylinder with @180,000 miles on it.

When the car is warmed up and I take the car out of gear and coast to a stop it frequently will idle at about 1200 to 1300 RPM's. When it is doing this and I tap the gas peddle it goes down to a low idle of about 700 RPM's. Its kind of like and old carberated engine with the choke still being on that you would have to hit the gas pedal fast to disengage the choke.

Any ideas on what is causing the high idle?

I would clean the throttle body and especially the idle air contorl valve, where the problem may exist. Here's a thread on how to do it on the on the 5SFE engine. Your 3SFE engine should be pretty much teh same. Be sure to spray the cleaner liberally down in to the square or diamond shaped hole in the base of the throttle body. That hole leads to the idle air control valve:
