A140L Transmission Question

I won the bid on a 1987 Celica ST that works fine in 1st or R, but will not go into 2nd, 3rd, or O/D. I am going to pick it up and bring it back on a tow dolly, but I came across the following info in the troubleshooting section for the same transmission on a Camry (A140L):

Troubleshooting for "No lock-up in 2nd, 3rd, or O/D"
Electronic control faulty - Inspect
Valve body faulty - Inspect
Solenoid valve faulty - Inspect

I wondered if anyone has done these steps on an A140L (and how), how in-depth these steps are (to do in someone's driveway even?), what worked for you if you did, and any tips or experiences you could share with me. Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Tracy

Hey Trace - Infrequent poster here, but looking for similar answers. I have (errr . . son left it here, tryin'ta git'er goin') a '91 camry w/A140L that wouldn't get to O/D and, more recently, the wife decided it looked like a farm truck to her and did some "field work" w/it and then it wouldn't shift into any gear. Been sitting 8 mos. now.
Anyhow, one thing I do know is that the A140L is NOT an electronic controlled trans. That's the A140E. But I'd still like to know the basic diagnostic steps I can do myself to figure my options. Used trannys are hard to come by and a shop rebuild can cost you dearly.
I've come across several possible leads to check out in posts here but I really should first haul the car out, jack her up and see if the oldlady (oops - did I say that?) hit a rock w/the pan. Then I'll be ready for any answers to your post - the next steps. THEN maybe flush trans. and replace screen (?). Can anybody shed some light over here please?

If a140L does not go past the 1rd gar, the governor driven gear can be broken.
Find that procedure in the gen 2 manual

Dr J - I guess you meant 3rd gear. So, I might be getting to the point I will need a manual, just to do the diagnostics. This car might not be worth the expense. There used to be free online ones linked here, but they're all gone now. But thanks just the same.
