Front bumper removal (gen 2)

Anyone know how to remove the front bumper on a gen 2?

I need to remove mine to replace the drivers side fender.

I have the 3 piece bumpers that come on early gen 2's. Not the 1 piece that came on later gen 2's.

It's not easy, I tried it once. I had a hand full of bolts and screw, but it was still on! What is that thing? It's like freakin titanium weld!

I have to bang out a ding in the valence, so I'll be outside today too.

I got the damn bumper off. It was easier then I thought, just 6 bolts.

Anyways heres some pics.

Right side by battery tray:

Left side:

Bottom left side (I put the bolt back into the hole, so I wouldn't lose it):

Bottom right side:

Front end with no bumper:

Bumper:

You also need to remove the corner / parking lights and unplug the blinkers.

Now you don't have to pay for the kit to be installed.

The next thing to do is remove the drivers side fender.

only saw this thread then otherwise would have helped you out. but when i did it, i didnt realise you could take off the bumper with the reinforcement (those big bolts in the engine bay) . i took the bumper off the reinforcement while they (reo's are seperate on my car) were still on the car, and that was a pain, something like 20 bolts.

^ How did you get the bumper skin off with the reinforcement bar still attached?

The bottom part is not a prob. Mine has a bar that goes across the bottom middle section with 6 bolts. And theres another 2 bars (1 on top of each blinker) with 2 bolts.

The top part is impossible to take off without removing the entire bumper (bumper skin and reinforcement bar), cos theres like 10 nuts that hold the top of bumper skin to the reinforcement bar. The nuts are on the backside.

I replaced my fenders about a year ago on my Gen2. To remove the bumper skin without removing the reinforcement bar, you have to remove the headlights, parking lights, grille, and that metal nose piece. That lets you get at the row of nuts along the top of the bumper skin.

The fenders on these cars are a huge pain. All that stuff mentioned above has to come off if you're going to replace a fender. Also, be careful with the two bolts on the bottom of the fender near the door. $10 says you break both of them, on both sides. I know I did..

i forget how i got at all the bolts, but i didnt have to remove the headlights. mine is a 2 piece bumper reo though (see photo below), but its kind of like the one piece, though with no middle bit, ie the reo's slot into the slots (where you do up the bolts from the engine bay), but it doesnt extend across the front of the car, so they are 2 seperate things.

the reo on the left (when looking at the photo, so really the righ hand side i suppose), is just below the indicator. same for the other side, though most of it is covered up with the number plate.
