Gen1 Bolt Pattern

Was wondering, since the A140E auto tranny is used for:
  • 1983-2001 Camry (4 cyl.)
  • 1994-1999 Celica GT
  • 1999-2001 Solara (4 cyl.)
Is the bolt pattern the same for these. just curious?

If you are talking about engine to transmission bolt pattern, then yes.

Generally (aside from a few smaller bolts sometimes) the S, VZ and MZ series engines are compatible with transmissions from the E-series (manual) and A140E/L and A540E.

Just because the bolt together doesn't mean they will work just right, but it is a good sign.

Ummm... you can physically bolt the trans from any Camry up to 2002 to a gen1 Camry engine. That doesn't mean that it will actually work. You only asked about bolt pattern.

What model trans is in the gen1 Camry? The A140L from a gen2 *might* be compatible enough to work with only minor mods.

I have the 4-speed A140E automatic transmission.

is the A140L an auto or manual tranny?

What kind of mods would need to be done if i could do the swap?

If you already have the A140E, then you can probably swap in another A140E. The A140L is the hydraulically controlled version of the A140E trans.

You would be breaking new ground if you did this swap, but you can probably make it work without much hassle. I have not read up on anyone doing it yet though...
