Info on tach wire (gen 2)

Someone over at the camryman.org forum was asking how to hookup a tach to a gen 2.

Anyways someone said you can tap into a wire behind the guage cluster and they were right.

I posted some scans out of my factory manual and thought i'd post it here to.

The tach lead is the black wire (pin 8) on a 8 pin plug (labeled as plug C on page 2) behind the guage cluster.

^ Heh.

You can swap guage clusters with one from a LE, but then you wouldn't be able to use those reverse indiglos that you have. Except for the speedo part anyways.

That was me. I'm glad I was right.

I find it pretty amusing that they would include the wiring for it on all models, but not the tach itself. To me, that's just penny pinching on Toyota's part.

I've done car work, but never actually had to swap a gauge cluster.

What do you do about the mileage? Spin the dial?

lol

You can swap the speedo over.

Theres a few screws on the backside of the guage cluster that hold it on.

Tell me about it.

My mom's Rolla came without a clock and stereo, but the wiring and plugs where there.

Bought a clock from the dealer (had a 20% off coupon) and I installed the factory stereo from my gen 2 (it plugged right in).

You can also wire up an aftermarket tach to the tach connection in the engine bay - its right on the top of the distributor...
