89 Camry won't run for any length of time

Hi

Our 1989 Camry won't run and the mechanic told us it was the distributor. We put in a new one and it had no spark still. If I unplug the EFI relay and plug it back in the spark returns. we have changed the ignitor and all fuses are good.

At times it will start up and run for 5 to 10 seconds before stopping, it is almost as if there is no fuel.

We installed a new rotor, cap, wires and distributer, and tried two distrinbutors.

Any help is appreciated

Jim

update

If I spray starter fluid in the end of the efi where air cleaner connects the car will run until the fluid is gone. I loosened the banjo at the cold start injector and turned on key and gas was spraying out. So any ideas on why the car won't fire without starter fluid?

I would like you to locate Fp and B+ terminals in diagnstic connector and jump them together with paper clip. Then stat the engine. if it will run with jumper but die within 5-10 seconds after jumper is removed, check the connector on airflow meter if it is secure and no pins or female terminals are damaged inside, inspect the ground connector below the driver side headlight for damage.
Let me know the results

Ok, I jumpered the connections and the car will not start, it kicks over but acts as if no fuel.

Thanks for the help. Does this mean bad fuel pump?

1] double check the presence of spark with spark tester
2) just in case check for the trouble codes
3] jump the Fp & B+ terminals and listen to the noise of moving fuel.
if pump makes no noise
locate the pump connector under back seat (blue & wht/blk wires) attach 3/8 cordless electric drill 9-12 VDC to it (to imitate the load)turn on ignition with jumper in place and see if drill runs.(do the test for few seconds)
If yes
attach the battery of that drill to the pump wires (+ to blue) _to white if pump does not run it is most likely bad.

Ok, no engine codes

If I turn on key, there is 13 volts at blue and white connector, if I plug connector back in I can hear the pump from above.

I could see no way of connecting my Makita to the leads. So I used a volt meter.

The car will run if I spray starter fluid in air intake.

Nest step you need to make sure that injectors are working.
Onec engine begins to work after spraying in intake, listen to the injectors they must click while engine is running.
Or you can check them when engine cranking by using injector tester noid light
