91 Camry mysterious click and smell

New member seeks help from Toyota Nation regarding mysterious "click" and smell!
The "click": I hear a "click" sound when starting from a complete stop, sometimes when the trans shifts to a higher gear, sometimes when taking my foot off the accelerator, and a more pronounced "click" when shifting from park to drive or reverse. Note this is not a "clicking" sound but a single "click" that occurs under the previously mentioned conditions. The "click" occurs when it is warm outside and maybe when the vehicle has been driven a while. Definitely when it is warm outside. It sounds like it is coming from the front driver's side. Transmission? CV joints? The boots look good. Cause for alarm? Any suggestions?
The "smell": On my commute, I have recently smelled a distinct hot car odor (kinda like overheated brakes) on several occasions. Not every time I drive the car but occasionally. It's not overheating, the coolant is fine, the brakes are fine. It's very hard to tell where this might be coming from (nothing is smoking).
Could the "click" and "smell" be related? Both have only been a recent issue. I have experienced steering wheel vibration at highway speeds on a couple occasions recently as well. Next time at highway speed - fine.
The car has been well maintained since 57k with only normal Gen 2 issues - distributor, starter, window motors that don't work when the vehicle interior is really warm, blower motor resistor burned out, turn signal "buzz", and the air conditioning doesn't work.
Looking for some suggestions on the culprits to these issues. Thanks in advance.
