Little Help for a 22re guy

Hey guys, just given a 1990 v6 camry, body and interior in good shape but the engine has got issues. Previous owner (bro in-law) decided to run it until it don't run no more. Told him I'd take it, that is, if I can get it started.

Wholly cow what a pain in the arse this thing is 2vz-fe? something like that....I thought the fuel filter on my 22re was a pain the butt (one of the biggest complaints)....

So I get the single clicking sound, take out starter but the contacts and plunger are good. Replace it with a reman anyhow (kept my denso) since maybe it was solenoid. Start getting the repeated clicking sound, been sitting a while so I jump it to help it out....starts to crank, but just won't turn over.

I unscrew the fuel cap and hear the pressure release, so I think my pump is working.

Go through the pain in the arse to change the distributor and rotor, still nothing. I go through the ROYAL pain the arse to pull the plugs which are pretty beat up, but calling it a day so I'll put new ones in tomorrow.

I hope the plugs are it, they are beat. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a known issue with these engines starting? I see no coil? cold start injector? It wants to turn over but just won't....so close.

Try to sell it and get a Corolla. Though a very good engine, the Toyota V-6, as you have discovered can be a pain to work on.

I might have thought of selling it, but it was given to me with the understanding that I would restore it and use it (it was his mother's who recently passed away), he knows I take care of my vehicles and wanted to ensure the vehicle kept running for his own peace of mind I guess.

Can someone tell me when I jump the terminals with a paperclip in the diagnostic thingy to get the fuel pump to run....should it turn off after a few seconds while jumped or should it constantly hummm until I turn the ignition off or remove the clip?

I'm thinking my pump is working but no fuel to the plugs because they aren't wet after trying to start it up???

Also, I can't get my CEL to come on. I jump TE1 and E1 with a paperclip and then turn the key to on, but the CEL never comes on, did I clear it out when I kept disconnecting the battery? How can I get it to give me some codes? or tell me nothing is wrong?
