1990 A140L Transmission question

Hello, I own a 1990 Toyota Camry 3SFE with a A140L transmission. It has 82,957 miles on it, but the transmission is grinding and is going to die very soon. I would like to explore replacing it with a re-built or a used transmission. I remember reading on this forum that certain model years can exchange transmissions (ex: a 1993 trans put in a 1990.) Does anyone know which model years I can choose from when searching for a transmission? I remember reading about it on this forum before, but can no longer find the thread. Also, does anyone have any information on the cost of a rebuilt A140L transmission?

Thanks for your time

Nicholas

Hi: A tranny from 87-91 should fit your car. I don't think Toyota made any big changes to the tranny during this model run of the Camry. The 92 and later are different. I don't know the cost of a rebuilt one. Maybe you can try calling around and see if you can get an estimate.

Cool, so any transmission will work up to 2000. Could you explain what you mean by "it must be replaced as assembly" ? I was going to replace the entire transmission with a used/rebuilt model and junk the current one.

Thanks!
