Japan 3sgte engine and trans question...

Im looking for a 3sgte for my Camry.
My only problem is what one to buy.
Should i get one from an MR2 or from a Celica GT4? What one will "bolt right in"?

Then...What about transmissions?
The Celica GT4 is AWD and the mr2 is a rwd car.
Would the celica tranny work in a FWD application?

Would this work to swap into my Camry?

thanks,
Mike

You will want to use a Celica 3s-gte. The accessories, water necks, mounts and wiring harness (along with other small bits) are much more compatible with a Camry engine bay.

You will not be able to use the AWD transmission in a FWD car unless you convert it to FWD (requires some MR2 turbo / Camry V6 manual trans parts and and a complete disassembly/reassembly of the trans).

An MR2 turbo transmission can be used if the shifter arms are converted from the front side of the trans to the back side using parts from the AWD transmission.

You can also use a normal Camry manual transmission (4 cylinder = weaker, V6 = stronger but harder to find).

The engine you linked to probably doesn't include a complete wiring harness, ECU and other parts you need for a complete running swap, but it might be a start...

if i get a front clip of a celica then buy a manual Camry trans or MR2 trans all would go well?
because front clips have the wiring harness and all.

Yeah, you will want a clip. You will have to deal with the axles (the Alltrac outers are fine, but you will need the correct inners and axle carrier), rear engine mount, wiring, intercooler, etc... Nothing too difficult though.

Make sure you also plan to do a full round of maintainence on the motor (timing belt, water pump, seals, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, hoses, etc.). I spent an extra $500-$1000 in the engine bay just on repair an maintainence parts when I did my swap (depending on what you count - I replaced my steering rack, steering arms, clutch master, brake master, clutch slave and a bunch of other stuff too).

If you are using a FWD version of the MR2 turbo transmission (by swapping shift cable mounts, rebuilding the Alltrac trans or just using a stock V6 Camry manual trans (1988-2001)) you need the MR2 turbo parts.

If you are using a Camry 4-cylinder manual transmission, then you just need full Camry 4-cylinder a manual axles.

Oh, before I go to far... the 4-cylinder manual transmission is part of the s-series (S51, S53) and the V6/Turbo transmission is part of the E-series (E52, E153).

The gen2 Camry hubs match the Alltrac hubs in terms of split #, size and length (ie, they are compatible). The Alltrac axles bolt to short stub axles that pop into the transmission.

If you use an E-series transmission, you will be able to use a stock Camry rear engine (really transmission) mount, but you will have to modify the bracket for the transmission... or get the correct parts from a gen2 V6 manual car.

So, there are some choices you have to make. Start researching! (there is a ton of information on the Celica boards... a FWD celica = FWD Camry for this research, pretty much)
