1989 Camry Starter Overun - Only When Cold

Starter runs on for a second or two - only when cold. Once warm, no problem. I suspect something "hanging up" in the starter, not a "sticky" ignition switch. Would a starter service (new brushes, plunger) address this or is something else going on here? Would the addtion of a starter relay (as described on this board) help?

My car had the same problem. You can rebuild the starter if you want, chances are it will take care of the problem. I ended up finding a starter at the wreckers (car had low mileage) and the problem is gone, and saved me a bunch of cash in the process.

My '96 Tacoma did something like that one morning (but more extreme). The starter wouldn't disengage, even after I shut the engine off. Turned out the starter contacts had worn in such a way that it created a step in the contacts such that that plunger caught on the step.

The contacts are pretty simple and inexpensive to replace.
