Question NEED: info about 87-91 wiper delay. Please!

My wiper delay has worked when it wants to since I got my 90 DX 14 months ago. When it does work, it makes a weird noise. But most of the time it never works. So finally, after waiting this long, I went and got a new combination switch from the wrecking yard out of a 89 LE. It has an adjustable interval thing on it, where mine was only 1 delay speed.

Still no delay!!!

Now, my question is this: Is the delay unit built-in to the wiper motor or is there some kind of relay or control box up under the dash?

I bought a used motor over a year ago but never replaced it because someone said it is NOT built-in to the motor, and since the motor works I left my original in.

The guy at the wrecking yard said if there are TWO plugs, the delay unit/relay is in the motor but if only ONE plug, it's not. Makes sense I guess.

Well, my motor has ONE plug, which is a 4-prong square one. Neither my Haynes or Chiltons mentions anything about wiper delays.

IF there is some hidden box or relay under the dash, can someone possibly post a picture of it so I'll know what to look for? I replaced EVERY relay that is plugged in above the fuse box but no luck.

Thanks much! Oh, and please understand... I live in Washington State! So I need wipers, but not full speed all the time.

Thumbs up

I just searched this thread for "wiper delay" and found a post by Doctor_J that has been the most useful post I've found in all the time I've owned this car! What helped is someone asked a question about wipers and he posted a link to CamryStuff where they have tons of free PDF manuals, many specifically for the 1990 (my year). I just loaded a bunch of them, and even found in the Electrical section exactly how to test a wiper combination switch with a multimeter.

These manuals are much more helpful and detailed than both my Haynes AND Chilton combined.

Thanks to Doctor_J, I can at least test my switches. But I still want to know if there is a relay or control box somewhere for the wiper delay.

I called the Toyota dealer and the parts guy wasn't sure so he asked one of his techs that has worked at Toyota dealers for over 25 years, who said it's been a long time since he's done a wiper delay on a 87-91 Camry, but if he remembers correctly, the relay/controls are located INSIDE the switch.

I still think there must be something under the dash that controls delay. If anyone knows, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Oh, that site mentioned above that I found because of Doctor_J's post is:

I need to play the lottery today!

Because it already seems like my lucky day! On camrystuff.com I located a specific 1990 wiring diagram manual that is a "measly" 185 pages long! Well, I just printed the following pages, which are going to be a blessing to me when I save more of the hair I already have very little of. PLUS, I got my original question answered through this wiring diagram! Yippee! (The wiper delay relay is INSIDE THE SWITCH!)

Looks like I'll be in the garage all weekend with a multimeter, test light, and half case of Corona!

Thanks to the 185 page Electrical PDF that I found, I found how to test the wiper switch OFF the car. I did it, and discovered that indeed the delay was bad in the switch. I'm going to assume the delay in the "new" (newer) switch is bad too. I wish I had found out about this test BEFORE I installed the one from the wrecking yard. Could have saved pulling my steering wheel.
