2nd Generation 89 Camry Ignition Fuse

Hello, I have a 1989 Camry, 4cylinder. When I turn on the key all the dash lights up as normal, but when I go to the start position there is no start. After much troublshootiing I see there is 2 ignition wires to the switch. I have no voltage on the white/red wire to the switch. According to to my manual, the red/white wire gets its power from a 30 amp fuse. I can not find this fuse anywhere. I see nothing labeled for ign for this circuit other than a 7.5 and 10 amp fuse. Where is this 30 amp fuse located? I have checked all the fuse under the hood in the box and all the fuses in the left side of the dash. I have no 30 amp blown. i checked every fuse in the car with my volt meter for continuity across them. Can someone put me onto the other end of the white/red wire location or fuse that feeds it? Thank you in advance for your time.

Check your fuseable links on the postive battery terminal, there should be three. Even if they test possitive check wires on the bottom of they holder due to poor design they fail and you may need to repair/replace. If your looking for a 30 standard blade fuze you won't find it it only thing that high are the large fuses on the batt terminal.

If everything checks out try starting the car in Neutral. You might have another problem. If you can't push the shifter into hard park and try to start with pressure applied to the shifter if it starts in either neutral or with pressure applied check your neutral safety switch.

How about the starter relay, located in the forward block behind the left kick panel, at the top right? It has 4 prongs. Just a thought. Maybe not the issue.

There IS a 30A fusible link "BOX" under the hood near the battery that protects: Ignition Fuse, Igniter, Ignition Coil, Distributor, and Injector. This fusible link (looks more like a square fuse) is located about an inch from the positive batter cable as you see in the following pictures. It's the one on the far right of the 3. You might check this. I can't be sure, but it's a wild guess and at least lets you know where that 30A fuse you're looking for is located. That 30A fusible link DOES have a red & white wire going to it! AND, it DOES come from the Ignition Switch! (I've been studying my wiring diagrams.) It's the one under the black cap marked AM2.

Good Luck! Let us know!

Thank you, The diagram shows I must have power on the switch befoe it goes to the neutral switch. There are no links at the battery. I know what you are referring to there because I see those on my truck. This car has no links here. Only plugs and there is power on both sides of the plugs. The white/red wire is not at this location either. I am truely lost on where this wire is fed from. I would hate to start cutting harnesses aprt to trace to it's power source. Again thank you for the advice.

Thank you hair ball. I am going to pull the battery out tomorrow evening and look better. All I see are straight thru plugs and have tested both sides and are good. I have beat my head against every nook and crany in this car so far. hehe. Again thank you fo ryour assistance here.

At this point, pictures would be helpful for us to help you diagnose. Maybe a previous owner tried to fix this problem and made it worse?

The white with red strip wire should connect pretty much directly from the AM2 fusible link to the ignition switch (though it does go through the Relay/Junction box in the engine bay and then through the junction block in the driver's footwell).

Wow, Charlie! You sound like you're quite the pro when it comes to the Camry! I know I certainly appreciate all your input. I've learned a lot from you!

As for him not having the fusible link box connected to the battery (as in the pictures I shot of my car), is it at all possible that someone has removed this box? It doesn't seem logical, but I'm at a loss as to why his car doesn't have this. He has the correct wire, which he knows goes to a 30A "fuse" (in this case, fusible link). But it's gone. Perhaps this is part of his problem. Maybe since the 30A protection is missing, a wire has burned or melted for some kind of short circuit?
