Positive Pressure at Oil Filler Hole

1989 Camry - added some oil the other day as I have had a persistant leak (about a quart a month w/very little driving). Started the engine without the filler cap on and noticed a tremendous amount of pressure coming from the filler hole. So much that it was a bit tricky to get the cap threaded properly... I've not really noticed this in any of my other vehicles and am wondering if it is "normal". Or, could the excessive pressure be the cause of my oil leak? I don't believe these cars were PCV equiped so nothing to clean there, right? Any ideas?

Excessive airflow out the oil fill cap indicates worn pistons/rings. This indicates a rebuild is in your future, but if the motor still has decent power and passes emissions tests, just keep driving it. While you are in the engine bay next time, make sure the crankcase ventilation hose is clear and unobstructed (and check on the throttle body and valve cover too).

Where are the oil leaks? There may also be excessive oil burn due to the worn pistons/rings.

I agree with the above poster. I would deffinetly pull your Breather hose off (on the drivers side of the valve cover) and make sure its not obstructed. Also, run a brush through the opening in the valve cover. This will make sure its not obstructed (mine was almost blocked when I got mine). That I would recommend getting some throttle body cleaner and running some through the breather hose while the engine is running.

There will naturally be a little blow by, but you deffinetly want to make sure there is somewhere for that gas to go. Otherwise, fuel and other things in your exhaust really mess with your oil and can increase engine damage.

good luck
