2nd Generation cooling fan not working

I have a gen2 v6 and its running hot for some reason. Do both of the fans have to come on to keep the motor cool?? I've been trying to figure out what is going on with fan. Is there any specific things i need to look at to see why the fan isnt kicking in?? I would really appreciate the help, especailly since im a still learning.

The cooling fans on a gen2 Camry have two modes: 'high' and 'low' When the water temp is too high, both fans should turn on 'high'. If the A/C is turned on, both fans should turn on 'low'

You should be able to force both fans to turn on by unplugging the fan water temp switch that is located on the water inlet neck of the motor. You can find it by following the radiator hose from the bottom of the radiator to the motor - there should be a single wire plug/sensor on the water neck.

The fans should only generally run once in a while, and generally never while on the highway/freeway. Around town or in traffic, you can expect them to turn on more often. The car should be able to still cool itself off decently even if only one fan is working, but you would want to replace/fix it if that was the case.

I would guess that there is another reason the motor is running hot. You will want to replace the radiator cap first (cheap, easy). Next, try the thermostat (cheap, not quite as easy). You will probably also want to check if the radiator is blocked... If that doesn't work, we can continue trying to figure out what is wrong. It might be a bad water pump, blown head gasket or many other things.

Also, does turning on the interior heater on high (high head, high fan) lower the engine temp? When/how does it overheat? In traffic? On the highway? Only going up hills? More info is better.

Here's something SELL, that way you won't have to concern yourself with this.

make sure you have radiator full, remove cap, start engine. As it warms up, you should see the water flowing in the rad. thru the cap opening. if not, youll at least feel the temp. of the water changing this says your thermostat is opening.

if all seems good, get a cap. However if you have a slight leak somewhere, the system cannot build up pressure , so it runs hot like a bad cap.

Does it seem hot or just the gauge says its hot?

CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL!!

Fans

had similar issue with my 88 Camry - after applying 12v to the fan that wasn't coming on (the one closest) to the battery - I found that it did work and replaced that relay with a known good relay from a donor car. It works now and my AC started to work again!

Thanks guys but i got the car to stay run at a warm temp, but the fan still doesnt work. i had the upper radiator hose spray coolant all over the place. So i dont know if it ruined a relay or if it sprayed the fan itself and ruined it from there.

What about the things we suggested you check/try?

you can check for 12 volts at the fan & at the relay. or just unplug the fan & apply 12 volts directly to it. it it comes on at least you know the fan is good. I doubt the water spraying had anything to do w/ the fans now not working. you may have accidentally knock ed a connection loose.
