This is usually only an issue on engines using a timing chain, where the tensioner does not work without oil pressure. (i.e. engine running) Engines with timing belt and no chain with oil pressurized tensioner between the camshafts will usually not have any problems when turned the "wrong" way, like when lining up the timing marks..
