2nd Generation '88 Camry All-Trac mileage

I looked up the factory-rated mileage and I'm running close to that but it still isn't too hot. Do you fellows have any tips as to how I could improve my mileage? I tried driving like a grandma but it didn't help.

I've pretty much gotten right in the original factory rated mileage on my auto Alltrac too. Generally 22-24mpg around town (well, this is actually still >50% highway) and up to 26-27mpg on road trips, etc.

What kills the mileage for me is the roof rack and bikes or skis/snowboards - on those trips I'm lucky to get 22mpg.

My Alltrac has 17in wheels with 215/40/17 tires (didn't affect mileage much). It also has a K&N drop-in filter, advanced timing and a slightly modified AFM (leaned a few clicks). None of these things did much either...

The low mileage is a bit surprising, as my 350hp WRX gets the same or better mileage and my first FWD 5-speed gen2 Camry got over 30mpg all the time (and up to 38mpg on road trips)... but I guess that's just how it goes.

Yeah, sounds about right. Our 2wd '91 used to get 32mpg in California traffic, replaced the engine and it immediately dropped to 20mpg if I'm lucky. 29 if I drive really easy... But I've got a few more things to replace with this. It's running much nicer on premium, even though it only called for regular. It pinged on the freeway a bit, but doesn't anymore.
