Gen1 gas problem, help

My '84 Camry cuts out after using the first two gallons of gas, after filling up. This has gone on for awhile but until a few months ago it wouldn't do this until I'd used about 8 gallons. It's getting worse. Now it's range has gone down to about 50 miles. Fuel filter is clean.

Is there an outlet tube that can become cracked near the top of the fuel tank. I did have that happen in an old Volvo. It'd start sucking air unless it was full.

I would rather look on the strainer installed on the pump suction line inside the gas tank. You may also try to run a hose to the pump inlet side from the 1 gallon gas can to rule out other problems

re: 1 gallon gas tank. Do you mean hold the can at the level of the top part of the gas tank or above? and put the tube in a certain depth? Would I be checking for gas tank problems or gas pump problems?

Can a weak fuel pump produce these symptoms?

One time we filled up a gas can with fuel and connected it to the gas pump on 81 cressida, so the gas pump sucked fuel from the can instead of the tank; we placed the gas can at the ground so it was about 10 inches lower then the gas tank but this test is worked, the engine started. (it was water in the gas tank). A weak gas pump will cause loss of power at the high engine speed

It is loss of power at high engine speeds but only when it's not full. When it's full it runs fine until a couple of gallons is gone and then craps out when you're at high speeds. You have to find a gas station at about 20-30 mph (hopefully no hills) and then it starts and runs fine again. I don't understand how water could cause this problem. Do you think it can?

Though a strainer is listed at the parts stores, I don't actually see one in the repair manual. Does it fit on the end of the outlet tube that's in the tank?
